West Qurna-2, located roughly 65 km north-west of the seaport town of Basra, is likely one of the world’s biggest onshore oilfields. The enlargement project is predicted to increase the oilfield’s production capacity from the present four hundred,000 barrels oil per day (bpd) to 480,000 bpd, with a target to achieve a complete production capability of 800,000 bpd by 2025.
The first order, from Cannon Artes, was for seven tremendous duplex API 610 OH1 pumps. The bespoke designed pumps are for a low shear utility and required specialist Plan 53B seal assist systems incorporating air cooled seals and stainless-steel accumulators. All electrical items were IECEx certified to be used in an ATEX Zone 2 hazardous space. Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic through the design and manufacture, supply was achieved within the required time of simply 32-weeks from order.
The second order, from SICIM, was for three tremendous duplex API 610 OH3 vertical in-line pumps for produced water remedy. The large pumps had impellers of over 500mm diameter and the casings, that weigh 1.5 tonnes, had been solid in a foundry in the UK. Plan 53B seal assist techniques have been designed to suit within a constrained footprint and because the pumps have been destined for an ATEX Zone 2 space, the motors, seal support systems, and instrumentation were IECEx licensed. Witness testing and inspection was undertaken by Bureau Veritas and a full legalised Iraq documentation package deal was delivered with the pumps. Delivery was achieved on a short 38-weeks, regardless of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
